- The Rathenauplatz is a 2.77-hectare park in Köln-Neustadt-Süd, enclosed by Roonstraße, Zülpicher Straße, Dasselstraße and Lindenstraße; the ground was wetland lying too low for building after demolition of the medieval city wall began in 1881 and the Kölner Neustadt was laid out to Josef Stübben's plans. A greening proposed by city garden director Adolf Kowallek was realised, with a plane-tree avenue around the square and a shrub-edged lawn in the middle, and in 1923 the square was renamed after Walther Rathenau, who had been assassinated in June 1922. - According to its own chronicle, the Bürgergemeinschaft Rathenauplatz e.V. was founded in 1977, and in 1995 the square was remodelled along the lines the association had pressed for, including a redesign of both playgrounds together with the Amt für Kinderinteressen and removal of the caged ball court.
