- The sports ground at the Herler Ring occupies the former Zwischenwerk XIa, one of the 17 large intermediate works of Cologne's outer fortress ring, built in 1877-1879 south of the Bergisch Gladbacher Straße. Apart from the Kehlkaserne the work was razed in 1920 under the Treaty of Versailles, whereupon city garden director Encke planned its conversion into a green fort with a sports facility; since 1924 gymnastics clubs have used the buildings as clubhouses and the sports ground for training.
