The sports ground at the Herler Ring occupies the former Zwischenwerk XIa, one of the 17 large intermediate works of Cologne's outer fortress ring, built in 1877-1879 south of the Bergisch Gladbacher Straße. Apart from the Kehlkaserne the work was razed in 1920 under the Treaty of Versailles, whereupon city garden director Encke planned its conversion into a green fort with a sports facility; since 1924 gymnastics clubs have used the buildings as clubhouses and the sports ground for training. In April 2019 the Amt für Landschaftspflege und Grünflächen presented 'Fit im Grünen', six new fitness locations planned along the right-bank Grüngürtel, one of them at the Zwischenwerk XI a am Herler Ring in Buchheim. Some 714,000 euros of North Rhine-Westphalian state and EU funding were available, construction was scheduled for 2020 and 2021, and the elements named as possible included circuit training, slackline, monkey bars, a ball wall and a climbing course.
