- The seven Bewegungsinseln were planned and delivered by the landscape architecture office Naumann Landschaft as part of the Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg's Masterplan Active City, and all seven construction sites were started and completed within roughly four months of building time. The surface is a synthetic-turf fall-protection system with quartz-sand infill; according to the planning office, apparatus with moving parts was avoided in favour of bodyweight-only equipment because earlier Hamburg outdoor fitness installations from the late 1990s and 2000s had to be dismantled completely after bearings and joints wore out and corroded. The planning office reports that sites on heavily used running routes found the greatest acceptance, so the islands are meant to pair jogging or walking with stationary strength, coordination and stretching training at any time in the open air.
