The spot is on the site at the corner of Barnimstraße and Weinstraße in Berlin-Friedrichshain where the Frauengefängnis Barnimstraße stood until 1974: built in 1864 to designs by Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann and Albert Cremer as a debtors' prison, rebuilt as the Königlich Preußisches Weiber-Gefängnis after Prussia abolished imprisonment for debt in 1868, and given an extension in 1910–1913 that provided room for 357 inmates. After the buildings were demolished a sports ground with a gymnasium was laid out on the site, and in the 1990s a traffic-training garden, today's Jugendverkehrsschule. (Source: de.wikipedia.org)
After the demolition a small memorial was created in 1977 in front of a neighbouring school on Weinstraße; its stele, shaped to recall prison bars, bears a text saying that many women resistance fighters against National Socialism were imprisoned there between 1933 and 1945 and that for more than three hundred of them it was the last stop before their execution at Plötzensee. The memorial plaque documented today at the Barnimstraße/Weinstraße corner, on the fence of the Jugendverkehrsschule, reproduces a courtyard drawing by Helen Ernst, who was held there in 1933.
